How much should tires cost?

Hey,

Okay, so I'm supposed to be the woman with all the deals, but I think I just got ripped off today. I needed to get a new tire - my one tire has been low on air forever, but no one ever finds a leak, so I just put air in that tire once a month or so.

Today, I left for tennis in the morning and it was extremely low again. I asked my hubby to put air in my tires again before we left for lunch and we decided to take it to a tire shop just to find out the true root cause of the problem.

So, when we got there, the guy looked at the one tire as well as the rest of them and said I need a whole new set of tires. What??? I've never actually gotten to this stage in life yet. All the years I had my trusty Honda prelude, I replaced a single tire - tire by tire because of unrepairable flats. This time, all my tires needed to be replaced at the same time because the tread was low, I was approaching 50,000 miles, I wouldn't get good performance in the rain blah, blah, blah.

I got the full story including one from my hubby who guilt tripped me since it's mostly my car we take the kids in. I guess I'm buying a whole new set of tires today.

So, the price???? $980.000 for 4 tires. But wait, we can knock off the disposal fee and bring it down to $958.00. This is not what I planned on spending today. I walked in thinking I was going to spend $50 max to patch up a tire. So, what do I do. I start bargaining... how much does other companies sell the same tires for and ask him to work with me on the price. He price-checks the tires at another shop and even though they are higher, he knocks another $5 off the price of each tire and I end up buying a new set for $938.00.

Now, I have 4 beautiful new performance tires on my car and all I can think about is if I got ripped off or not? Did I get a deal because he discounted my tires further than the standard price? How do tire companies operate? Are they allowed to negotiate on price? How much lower would he have gone??? I'll never know...

Feel free to comment how much tires should cost for a high performance SUV. I bought some for $175 a pop, plus some crazy warranties where if I ever have a problem, they replace for free. Ltr,

You didn't get ripped off, but you might have bought higher quality tires than you needed. Search your vehicle at www.discounttire.com and you will see the range of prices. Maintaing tire pressure and rotating tires will help them last longer.
